HuddsMusicScene Home

HMS was first formed in January 2004 by Stevo.  Initially it was formed when this website was set up as a resource and meeting point for Huddersfield bands and artists.

Abrahams had just closed, and with no obvious replacement, and a lack of  venues committed to featuring live music, HMS started promoting gigs.

Through 2004, HMS put gigs on at The Lockwood, The Vox, The Media Centre, Elements (Bar 1 Twenty), The Station Tavern and The Courthouse (now Tokyo's).  Lot's of new Huddersfield bands started to appear, and the previous establshed Hudds bands were continuing to improve with some playing many national gigs and regularly attracting label interest.

Through 2004 although HMS regularly put on gigs, it still seemed like no other venue/landlord was prepared to take it one step further.  In June 2004 HMS, now Stevo and Oli put on Wavelength every Thursday at Elements to add to The Acoustic Club they held there every Tuesday.

In September 2004 the Wavelength was moved to a Friday and was a great success until the management at Elements,  (Bar 1 Twenty) crumbled under increasing problems from the unsavoury locals who frequented the venue.

HMS promoted their last ever gig at Elements upstairs featuring Serotonin, Marrazon and 'G'

We then moved to the Station Tavern for 6 weeks, where despite good support from the landlord,in the end they just couldn't cope with the 'rock crowd' moshpits etc that gigs brought.

With Jan 2005 looking very bleak for HMS a simple twist of fate was to come along and provide the perfect answer for the HuddsMusicScene.

Elements was taken over by Lewis Haynes and renamed Bar 1 Twenty, Lewis who has a wealth of experience in the music industry asked HMS to promote gigs on a more full time basis.  Stevo and Oli both left their jobs and started putting more and more gigs on at Bar 1 Twenty.

Although exciting, it was a daunting prospect, the regular sound and pa company HMS were using were unable to committ to the volume of gigs we planned to put on.  With a deep breath and lots of crossed fingers, HMS borrowed £3000 and went into unfamiliar territory of running our pa. (and paying back the money).

Although the pa was a week late, we eventually got it wired in and up and running.  It was at this time HMS took on another very important team member our sound engineer - Josh Blinkhorn.
The success of Josh's work and the consistent praise we receive for our sound is one of our proudest achievements.

Just when everything seemed sorted we got a visit from the Police, oh yes!  They decided to be very mean to us and stop us having any under 18's in the venue.  Where as we certainly don't advocate under age drinking we believe that Under 18's should be freely allowed to see gigs.  The ban came in on April 22nd 2005 on what became known as - The Day the Scene Died.

So, we had to rebuild again.  It was a month later when we felt if we managed the venue fully in our way, we could alleviate some of the concerns the police had about having under 18's in at gigs.

So, HMS then became venue managers, we upped our nights to six a week and started getting used to running a bar as well as gigs.  It was tough, but great fun.  Knowing we had full control inspired us to stabilise what we had and ensure we'd still be around for a few years.

Eventually in September 2005  we were in a position to take on two new staff, Isaac and Noah, both had been great voluntary helpers, and derserved a role within HMS.  They were both taken on to help promote HMS and sort out our disintegrating computer/communications/marketing system.  We had a new website designed and were ready to get started.  Timmy and Greg also started as occasional part time helpers.

With yet another burst of bad luck we lost our internet connection for four weeks leaving Isaac and Noah bursting to get started.

When we finally got the net back on, wait for it, another disaster, our two prehistoric computers finally packed in.

It was just too much!  We all felt like we had had enough.  Unable to contact bands, use e mail etc, we considered calling it a day, coupled with a few ongoing problems at the venue and some equipment being stolen on Friday November 18th we decided to leave Bar 1 Twenty and go back to being just promoters.

A couple of cancelled gigs later and we started to miss it already.  We ended up renegotiating our contract borrowing yet another chunk of money to buy new computers.  Big shout to the credit card!

So that is the story so far.  Recent developments for 2006 include a new bar we are opening upstairs above the main gig room, loads more music, new nights and lots of more great times at Bar 1 Twenty.  We are also pleased to announce another new member of staff Jonny Saville, who will bring his specialist knowledge into our new Monday night programme in 2006.

In the time that we have been doing this the HuddsMusicScene has exploded with new venues and promoters and will hopefully continue to improve throughout next year.  It is because of this that HMS will STOP promoting under the name of HuddsMusicScene and keep HMS instead.

Thank you to all the support we have been given through the time we have been promoting, please keep coming to gigs.  To all the people who have never been here.............come down, you really are missing at least something!

Our greatest shouts go to all the bands young and established who have gigged with us, offered us support and advice also.  We look forward to seeing you all in 2006.

A huge thank you goest to Tony Wrest for the provision of webspace for huddsmusicscene and all the technical help he continues to provide.

Also to Chris Allen for his neverending kindness
